More secure 3D display in the Database of Zeolite Structures |
Christian Baerlocher has implemented a new version of the software for displaying animated framework drawings in the Database of Zeolite Structures. It is based on JSmol, which is an HTML5-only verson of Jmol, and no longer requires that Java (a security risk) be installed on your computer. Furthermore, the animated drawings will now work on mobile devices that support javascript (e.g. iPad, iPhone, Android devices). All of the features of the previous version are still available, but the performance, especially for the surface calculations, is slower. The previous version is still available for users who require the faster performance (just click on the button "use JAVA"). |

Symposium in Honour of Prof. Ramoa Ribeiro |
The Portuguese Zeolite Group of Instituto Superior Técnico is organizing a symposium Catalysis: From the Active Site to the Process in honour of Prof. Fernando Ramoa Ribeiro, who sadly passed away last year.
Prof. Ramoa Ribeiro dedicated his life to teaching and researching in the field of catalysis with zeolites. He had an extensive cooperation with several international laboratories, and this contributed to the development and strengthening of the European catalysis community. The Organizing Committee hopes to attract a large international gathering of his friends and collaborators to pay tribute to this great sceintist and man. |

Zeolite synthesis research selected by Science editors as one of ten breakthrough areas in 2011 |
The advances in the synthesis of tailored zeolitic materials reported in Science in 2011 by groups in South Korea, Spain, China, France, Germany and the USA are seen by the editors as one of the top ten breakthrough areas of the year. In their summary of the research (Science, 334, 1635), they write:
"This year, researchers found new ways to tailor the size of their [zeolite] pores and create thinner, cheaper membranes." and
"This surge of molecular wizardry provides a vivid reminder that the creativity of chemists keeps their field ever young."
